Key ingredients
- Apples – Serve as both the fruit and the little edible bowl for the crisp topping. Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Fuji, or Pink Lady all work well because they bake without falling apart.
- All-Purpose Flour – Helps bind the crisp topping and gives it structure.
- Brown Sugar – Adds sweetness, warmth, and that caramel-like flavor.
- Pumpkin Pie Spice – Brings cozy spice without needing to measure cinnamon, nutmeg, and all the extras separately.
- Chopped Pecans – Add crunch, nuttiness, and texture against the soft baked apples. I’ve also tried this recipe with chopped walnuts, so those work too!
- Old-Fashioned Oats – Give the topping that classic crisp texture.
- Butter – Helps the topping bake up rich, crumbly, and golden.
Can I make stuffed baked apples ahead of time?
Yes. You can prep the apples and topping ahead, then bake when ready. For the best texture, bake them fresh.

Reheating & Storing
Reheat the baked apple crisp in the oven at 350°F until warmed through, or microwave in short bursts if you just want it fast. Air frying at 350°F for five minutes works well too.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Baked Apples
Ingredients
- 4 apples
- ¼ cup all purpose flour
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, see notes
- 1 ½ tablespoons chopped pecans, or walnuts
- ¼ cup old fashion oats
- 3 tablespoons butter , unsalted, cubed and softened to room temperature
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Cut the tops off the apples, the core out some of the flesh from the inside. You can use a spoon, melon baller or a cookie scooper. Just be careful not to break the skin of the apples. Keep enough of the apple flesh, you just want to take out enough to add the crisp topping inside.

- In a mixing bowl combine the flour, brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice, pecans, vanilla, and oats. Add the butter, and use your fingers to mix the butter into the mixture pressing it firmly into it.

- Add the filing evenly to the apples. Put the apples into a baking dish with about one inch of water on the bottom. The water will help create steam to soften the apples while baking.

- Place the apples into the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes. Watch after 30 minutes to ensure the skin isn't peeling away from the flesh. The apples should be nice and soft when finished but still have a slight firmness to them. Top with some vanilla ice cream, eat and enjoy!
