I love using yogurt to tenderize meat like these chicken thighs because it adds so much flavor. Greek yogurt is a staple almost every time I grocery shop because it is so versatile.

Ingredients for yogurt marinated chicken thighs

You really don’t need too many ingredients for these chicken thighs, a lot of them I normally have on hand at home.

Bone in, skin on, chicken thighs – I love using bone in skin on chicken thighs because they are so tasty and affordable. For this meal I only spent $3.85 for a 2lb pack.

Greek yogurt – The greek yogurt is star of the show. Acting as a tenderizer, it also takes well to the spices and aromatics we will add to it.

Olive oil – This helps to add a bit of flavor while thinning out the marinade so it coats the chicken and isn’t too thick.

Garlic – Finely minced, this aromatic helps with the flavor profile of the marinade.

Spices & herbs – Turmeric, black pepper, red pepper flakes, paprika and dill all add a Greek flavor profile to the chicken thighs.

Honey – This adds a hint of sweetness and also helps the skin get nice and crispy.

What does marinating with yogurt do?

Greek yogurt tenderizes the chicken slowly to make sure the meat is soft and tender. It works on other meats as well such as beef, lamb and pork.

How long to marinate chicken in yogurt?

The yogurt begins to tenderize the chicken at 1 hour and the longer it sits, the more tender and flavorful the chicken will become. The longest it should be marinated is overnight.

Do you cook the chicken with the marinade on it?

Absolutely! Since we are baking this, you don’t need to wipe off or shake off any of the yogurt. If you were to grill the chicken, then you would need to wipe off some of the marinade.
